NATS: Making technical information accessible to all

The challenge

NATS is the UK’s leading provider of air traffic control services. Each year it handles 2.4 million flights and 250 million passengers in UK airspace as well as providing services around the world.

It’s a very technical operation, and while NATS employs a large number of engineers, it needed to explain its systems architecture in a way that brought it to life for both technical and non-technical employees.

Our solution

The Sequel team talked to system architects, engineers and the comms team to gain a full understanding of the system and suggested an animated video was the best way to communicate.

The narrative was developed frame by frame, each time checking with the system architects that it was technically and factually accurate, for example making sure that if an image of a computer was used that it featured the appropriate line of code.

For the voiceover, we chose a Scottish woman with a warm tone and engaging accent to help draw people in and engage them with the complex content.

The value

The film is regularly shown internally to explain the NATS systems architecture and is available to view on the company intranet. It is also used in induction, training sessions and presentations to explain how NATS is becoming a service organisation.

NATS scored Sequel top marks in a customer satisfaction survey and has since commissioned a second film to explain complex information in an engaging way using the same animated style.
