One of the best-known platforms for building an enterprise social network (ESN), it’s built a big reputation in a relatively short space of time.
While it’s still early days for ESNs overall (just 10 per cent of organisations currently have one), they’re already making a huge difference to the way some of us work.
An ESN brings the tools and technologies of the social media we use at home – Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, for instance – into the workplace. It can:
- help people to do their work, by providing answers to their questions and a place to easily collaborate
- foster innovation, by linking people who would otherwise never meet and by encouraging discussion around new ideas, from small process tweaks to larger ideas for new projects and products
- flatten the apparent hierarchy in an organisation, removing any perception of ‘ivory towers’
- provide more ready access to colleagues throughout the company.
According to IBM, the value for ESNs comes down to organisations ‘sustaining their competitiveness and profitability in economies in which rivals, partners and customers are adopting new ways of conducting business’.”
