Best places to work in 2019 – would you get top spot?

Anglian Water has topped Glassdoor’s list of the best places to work in 2019 – beating competition from top companies such as Google, O2 and GlaxoSmithkline.

And unlike other workplace awards, the Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Awards are based on the input of employees who voluntarily provide anonymous feedback by completing a company review about their job, work environment and employer over the past year.

So what do employees value most when it comes to their experience at work?

Along with good work-life balance, reviews of the top 10 companies awarded cite feeling valued and supported as an individual as high on their list of employment priorities, along with plenty of opportunities for career development and being valued as an individual.

So what can we learn from this as internal communicators?

What’s striking about the leading organisations is that employees really feel their opinion matters. They feel informed about, and involved with, their company’s strategic direction and they’re clear about how their role contributes.

Here are just some of the reviews submitted about the top 10 companies to work for:

“The workplace is friendly and communication is open, technology is available to allow a fantastic work/home balance.”

“Culture, innovations, self-development, career opportunities, brand, benefits, salary. SAP really takes good care of its employees.”

“Fantastic culture, smart, motivated, inspirational people who genuinely care about each other and their clients.”

“Great colleagues, flexible working, excellent training, innovative and your opinions matter.”

“A very friendly and a relaxed environment with constant communication between employees.”

As communicators it’s important that we not only convey strategic messages in a compelling way but also ‘talk’ to employees’ hearts and minds – and give them the opportunity to express their opinions, so they feel just as valued as customers and clients.

True engagement is a two way street. Make sure yours doesn’t end in a cul-de-sac.
