The well workplace: how blurring the boundaries between work and home life and unrelenting change continues to impact employee wellbeing
While the advent of hybrid working promised flexibility and improvements to our work/life balance, the reality has arguably brought new wellbeing challenges that need to be recognised and addressed.
New collaboration tools have greatly improved how we can work from anywhere, but they’ve also introduced a volume of distractions and risked blurring the gap between home and work.
Our 2022 Trends Report revealed that the ‘always on’ culture is taking its toll, with employees increasingly feeling the need to check and respond to emails at all hours and struggling to concentrate when using multiple apps and receiving huge volumes of notifications.
Employees are also having to cope with the relentless pace of change.
But there are positive signs of change. Research from one of Sequel’s clients Bupa found that nearly 30 per cent of UK business leaders are making employee mental health a priority.
And in our own work for clients we’re seeing a resurgence of wellbeing initiatives and campaigns with internal comms working alongside HR and IT in raising awareness of how organisations are actively supporting better working practices and wellbeing.
Not only is this employee support welcomed, but there are business benefits too. A study by the Global Wellness Institute showed employees are more engaged and productive in organisations with wellbeing programmes, and these organisations were more profitable too.
With that in mind, our 2022 Trends Report offered these three top tips to help your business become more of a wellness workplace:
- It’s crucial to get your line manager community on board
- A great wellbeing programme doesn’t need to cost the earth. Be resourceful and use multiple channels to raise awareness of support and offer employees tips on getting a better work/life balance. Remember, Sequel can help you plan and execute a successful, and cost-effective wellbeing campaign
- Set up a network of wellbeing ambassadors to listen to employee concerns and offer confidential support and advice.
